Born in 1946 in Moscow. In 1970 he graduated from the journalistic department of the Moscow
University, later – from the Higher Courses for Scriptwriters and Film Directors (class of G.Danelia).
Debuted in directing in 1982. He got international fame with the film «Cloud Heaven» (1991) which
was awarded with Silver Leopard at Locarno IFF. Among his most known works are winners of
different international prizes «Shura and Prosvirnyak» (1987), «A Small Giant of Big Sex» (1992),
«Cops and Robbers» (1998), «Nick The Rolling Stone» (2005) and others. «Pete on the Way to
Heaven» won 3 Golden Eagle awards, 6 Nika awards and Grand Prix at the Moscow IFF.
