Born in a family of architects in 1958 in Leningrad. After graduating from
the Leningrad State University (Faculty of Philology) in 1982, he entered
full-time postgraduate studies at the Leningrad State Institute of Theatre,
Music and Cinematography. In 1986 he defended his dissertation on
Pushkin’s “Mozart and Salieri” in theatre, film and television. Ph.D. in History
of Arts. Since 1987 – an editor and presenter on LenTV. From 1992 to 1997
– an author and host of the show “Quiet House” on the channel “Russia-1”,
since 1997 – a deputy chairman of the TV channel “Petersburg-5”; from
1998 to 2019 – a producer, author and host of the show “Quiet House” on
ORT, Channel One. Currently, he heads the Petersburg-Culture studio. Author
of more than 300 publications in the magazines “Aurora”, “Ogonyok”,
“Soviet Screen”, “Film Art”, “Panorama TV”, newspapers “Vedomosti”,
“Moscow News”, “Arguments of the Week”. His filmography includes: “Valery
