Born in Libre, a town in the Amur region, Leonid Gaïdaï first studied at the theater school attached to the Irkousk theater. In 1955 he graduated from the directing faculty of VGIK (National Institute of Cinematography) under the direction of Grigori Alexandrov. From 1955, he worked as a director for Mosfilm.
Best Comedy Director Award for 1972 at the 1972 Soviet Union Film Festival.
