Biography
Born in Guryev, Kazakhstan on 25.6.1961,
he studied in Moscow from 1978-80. In
1987 he completed his studies as a stage
and film set designer at the Ostrovsky
Academy in Tashkent, where he also worked
for Uzbekfilm Studio. Since 1989 he has
largely directed commercials. After his first
feature film PESHAWAR WALTZ in 1992, he
made THE ARENA, a gladiator film coproduced
by Roger Corman, in 2000. He
enjoyed international theatrical success
with NOCHNOI DOZOR (NIGHT WATCH)
which was shown in a Berlinale Special
screening in 2005.
