Former ward of an orphanage, Ania Morozova lives in a community apartment in Saint Petersburg; she teaches at the Faculty of Foreign Literature and has an affair with a married colleague. His peaceful secluded life is turned upside down by his former classmate, Dima Morozov, who falls on his back with a futile request. After which, an investigator visits Ania accusing her of an atrocious crime. Understanding that she cannot count on anyone, Ania flees and pretends to be a runaway teen. Chance leads her to a 13-year-old orphan, Kristina, who, unlike Agia, knows exactly where to flee: in Kazakhstan where her grandmother would live. Although she strongly doubts the existence of this grandmother, Ania nevertheless agrees to accompany Kristina and sets off with her on the roads.
