Plot synopsis
“You, my dear Marie, had a beautiful dream. But throw it all out of your head” (E.T.A. Hoffman, “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King”)
The Red Forest has stuffy air which hides the deer, desecrated with secret slaughter. I enter the soft light through high grass, stepping on large stone stairs. Depth. Strange trees, moss planted by someone, huge human-size burdock, and low dolmens, signs pointing down there, where there are bodies buried – this is a long abandoned park, showing through the past. Tropical rain cuts off my way to the car, parked nearby, and covers this abandoned German city with its dark wet paw...
United Germany: Dresden, abandoned by Germans, boarded-up houses that you see from the windows of the East German trains, Berlin underground stations, covered with Turkish spittle, rebellious youth in the squares of Mitte and Kreuzberg. Great Germany, which once played the best role in a fine-tuned theatrical fare of the European Union, sophisticated economic and social machine, now lying broken like an abandoned temple in the Cambodian forest.
Kaliningrad region, also former East Prussia, you are the lost daughter of your Vaterland and the stepdaughter of Russia. Are you Germany’s past or not so distant future?
