Stepan Potanin, a gold-digger, works at the «Tikhy» gold-field. His father dreams of his return to his artel and gives him a bar of gold that has been found at the unknown lucrative gold deposit. Stepan is accused of steeling the bar. Offended by the disbelief, Stepan joins his father and soon they hand over to the engineers of the gold-field new gold deposits. Stepan is assigned chief of the mines and he makes a declaration of his love to Galina Polevaya, an engineer, and his father leaves in search of new deposits.
