Plot synopsis
A long-standing friendship binds the family of the tailor Barkhoudar to the family of the potter Ajran. The tailor's daughter, the beautiful Susanna was betrothed according to ancient Armenian custom to the potter's son, Sejran. The friendship between the girl and the boy has developed into a reciprocal love known to all. But the ancient custom requires that the two young people wait until the day of the wedding to see each other. The fiery Sejran oversteps this old custom and sees Susanna several times in secret. The girl's father, a fierce guardian of ancestral customs, occasionally witnessed one of these encounters. Deeply hurt by the behavior of the young man who brought dishonor to the girl's family, Barkhoudar breaks his friendship with the potter and marries his daughter to the merchant Roustam. Sejran unsuccessfully tries to kidnap the girl during the wedding. Love and jealousy push him to lie: he makes Roustam believe that he was very intimate with the young girl. Roustam, furious, not listening to Susanna's protests, kills her. Meanwhile, fearing the disastrous consequences of his lie, Sejran decides to return to the city at full gallop but he arrives too late and kills himself.
