Ayub, a young Muslim Uyghur who has fled China after the government crackdown in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, lives in one of the many unfinished buildings in Almaty, the capital of Kazakhstan. He works part time at a brick factory and finds money and cigarettes on the street. Ayub is looked after by Kaisal, who steals cars for a living, and Maria, a 14-year-old tubercular prostitute, but he keeps worrying about his mother. When he gets introduced to a group of radical fundamentalists, Ayub sees their devotion as a way to give meaning to his own life and situation. He begins training as a guerrilla, as a terrorist...
