The film exists in three versions: a silent French version (1929-30), a German sound version (1937) and a French sound version (1941). The puppets were full size to perform expressive mime and execute movements with high plasticity. For the script, episodes from international children's folklore have been selected, but all the versions are adapted to the cultural context of the country of release: instead of the French monkey cheerfully representing the "actors" before the projector, the German version shows a fist hitting an ancient folio edition, thus shaking out its "performers".
