Plot synopsis
In the winter of 1924 the Bolshevik Stepan Petrov together with his wife Varvara and daughter Olga set out to Moscow on foot. They must hand their fellow countrymen’s letter over to Lenin. In the steppes they are overtaken by a gang of kulaks. Stepan is killed and Varvara and her daughter walk on alone. Together with other pilgrims they get to Gorky where they learn about Lenin’s death. They head for Red Square. Stalin ascends the rostrum and vows faith to Lenin’s ideas. After that Varvara Petrova hands him the letter. When the war breaks out Varvara Mikhailovna will send her children off to defend the Motherland.
