Screen version of the novel of the same name by A.Kuprin. The beginning of XX century. The regiment housed in a small town drink and yawn their life away. Corporal Romashov falls in love with Shurochka, the captain’s wife. The rumors about it are spread around. There is a quarrel between the captain and the corporal. Romashov persuades captain Nikolaev to imitate a duel in order to save «husband's honor». The duel ends tragically - Nikolaev fatally wounds Romashov.
