Winter 1941. The remnants of the company, in which 19-year-old Alexey Kazantsev serves, arrive from the front line for reorganization in besieged Leningrad. Here he meets Olya, the daughter of an elderly recruit Koshkin, his neighbor in the barracks, who comes to her father every day - he shares his bread ration with the half-starved girl. When one day the girl does not show up, Alexey realizes that she needs help. Having learned the address, he hurries to her. His appearance restores Ole's will to live. Alexey gives her tea, then takes her to the theater. When the time comes for the young man to return from leave, Olya begs him to stay. Friends, guessing where Alexey went, send the girl’s father to pick him up the next morning. An indignant Koshkin, with a gun at the ready, leads Alexei to the barracks under bombing through a frozen desert city. When his strength weakens. Alexey offers his shoulder. So they get to the barracks. Meanwhile, they are informed that they are scheduled to be sent to the front line the next day. Alexey runs to Olya and takes her to the registry office. The company goes to the front. Olya is among the mourners. She will wait for Alexey.
