The conquest of space in Soviet cinema

We have selected 49 films, each of which recounts, in its own way, the extraordinary cosmic epic, sometimes imagined, sometimes experienced, by the Soviets, culminating in Yuri Gagarin's first journey into space on 12 April 1961. Among the fiction films, several have become cult classics, including The Planet of Storms, 1961, by Pavel KLOUCHANTSEV, which more than forty years later inspired several American films, and the silent film Cosmic Flight, 1935, by Vassili JOURAVLIOV, a pioneering film that became popular in the 1960s, notably for illustrating the problems of weightlessness encountered by cosmonauts

35th Message to Man : International Short, Documentary and Animated Film Festival St Petersburg (Russia) - 17 - 25 October 2025
Lenin in Russian and Soviet cinema

On this page, we present 90 films that mention Lenin and contribute to shaping a certain image of the founder of the Soviet regime. This list of films, consisting mainly of feature-length fiction films, does not claim to be exhaustive. Contemporary cinema continues to fuel this reflection, with the release of a series entitled “Chronicles of the Russian Revolution” (Хроники русской революции) by Andrei Konchalovsky expected before the end of 2025, and a Russian-Indian co-production, tentatively titled Lenin, scheduled for release in 2026.
