Andreï Echtaï est né le 18 avril 1956 à Moscou. Il a fait ses études au VGIK (École nationale de cinéma). Après un premier court-métrage, Quand on jouait Bach (1983), il tourne Le Bouffon (1988), Humiliés et offensés (1991), puis Une colline en fleur dans un champ vide (2000), film à un seul personnage, et la série télévisée Les Enfants de l’Arbat (2004), d’après le célèbre roman d’Anatoli Rybakov. Il a également signé plusieurs documentaires, dont La Mer russe, 90 ans du studio Gorki. Jalons d’une histoire.
