Psychological drama.
The movie is set in autumn near St. Petersburg in the old
house of Georgy Protasov, a prominent Soviet poet, winner
of numerous awards. In this abode with no men and no
money there live his widow Inessa Iosifovna, his daughter
Serafima, three grand-daughters and Billy-Bons, Protasov’s
former secretary. Dreaming of perpetuating the memory of
her husband, the widow secretly tries to get everything necessary
to turn the country house into a museum. Serafima,
whose husband has long since gone to America, and who is
concerned about family finances, thinks about the right ways
of using the land and the house. The grand-daughters each
in her own way need a certain amount of money and can’t
understand why they are poor. On the day of the anniversary
of the grandmother and grandfather’s wedding a luxuriant
car drives up to their house and a certain Rusetsky, followed
by his driver-bodyguard, alights from it. The uninvited guest
feels at home, lavishly lays the table and soon announces
that he is purchasing the house…
