Louis Forestier est né en France. De 1908 à 1910, il a travaillé à l'atelier de cinéma de Léon Gaumont. En 1910, il est venu s'installer en Russie où il est devenu le chef opératuer principal de la maison de production A. Khanjonkov & Cie. De 1910 à 1919 il fut le chef opérateur de plus de 50 films. A partir de 1920 il a été nommmé chef opérateur au Mossovet.
Il est l'auteur du livre Le grand cinéma muet (Великий немой), 1945
