Après des études techniques, il entre au VGIK (Institut national de la cinématographie) dans la maîtrise de V. Touliakova et O. Aguichev et obtient le diplôme de scénariste en 1990. Il obtient le bélier d’or du meilleur scénariste en 1993 et le prix Eisenstein en 1994.
