Youli Karassik est né à Kherson (Ukraine) en 1923. De 1942 à 1946, il est élève à l’école militaire de Tachkent. Il étudie ensuite la philologie à l’institut pédagogique de la faculté de Leningrad et prend des cours à l’école de cinéma de Lenfilm. En 1951, il obtient le diplôme de réalisateur au VGIK. En 1962, il reçoit le grand prix du Festival de Venise
