Born on August 13, 1929 in Baku.
Graduated from the Romano-German department of the Erevan University (1956), completed the postgraduate course at the M.Gorky Institute of World Literature (1961). Taught at the Erevan Pedagogical Institute. Since 1964 worked as assistant director, director, editing director at the studio «Armenfilm». Worked as a trainee director and assistant director for Andrei Tarkovsky, who became the creative advisor for Oganesian's feature-length debut «Acerb Grapes».
