Plot synopsis
“Queen of Spades” is a contemporary adaptation of two works: Alexander Pushkin’s “The Queen of Spades” and Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s opera of the same name. Opera singer Sofia Meyer (Ksenia Rappoport) is world-famous for her unbelievable soprano voice and beauty, and has become a legend. She would like to end her career with one final triumph. Sofia returns to the Moscow opera theatre, where she once starred in Tchaikovsky’s “Queen of Spades” – it was her first major success. Hoping to outdo it, she begins to search for material to create a new, even more astounding version of the work. Trying to overshadow everyone, herself included, Sofia uses every means known to her… “Queen of Spades” is an exceedingly-untraditional adaptation of this work, combining mysticism with noire to recreate the reality of a contemporary megapolis – Moscow, the city that truly never sleeps – and the eternal myth about art and beauty, demanding insane and at times even devilish sacrifices.(http://pioner-cinema.ru/en/film/queen-of-spades/)
