Plot synopsis
Filled with quiet, desperate characters, this sensitive, version of Chekhov's great play, set in provincial Russia, is a penetrating study of the languid melancholia of the residents of an isolated country estate. Concerned primarily with a starry-eyed young writer, his selfish, aging actress-mother, and their circle of friends. Yuli Karasik's lavish production of Chekhov's classic take on tragic, unfulfilled love features some of the era's finest stage actors. Presented with great attention to historical moment, the film beautifully captures the literary and theatrical realism that inspired Chekhov and the rise of method acting.
