Aleksandr Alov (son vrai nom était Lapsker) est né le 26 septembre 1923 à Kharkov. En 1951 il termine ses études à la faculté de formation des réalisateurs du VGIK (Institut national de la cinématographie) sous la direction de Igor Savtchenko. Il travaille comme assistant de ce dernier pour le film Taras Chevtchenko (Тарас Шевченко). Il en terminera la réalisation avec Vladimir Naoumov après la mort du Maître.
C'est ainsi que commence une longue collaboration entre les deux réalisateurs. Ils co-réaliseront tous leurs films jusqu'à la mort d'Aleksandr Alov en 1983.
