Serguei, Slavska and Kolka are war children living in Moscow. Their parents have died at the front. But their maturity coincides with the thaw and their existential anxiety reflects both the atmosphere of new liberties and the uncertainties of the future. The film was censured by Khrushchev. A reworked version was released in 1964 with the title I'm Twenty.
